Debut 1967 (Saarbrücken, part of Lionel in Tchaikovsky’s Maid of Orleans). Sang in German theaters. In 1973 he performed the role of Amfortas in Parsifal at Covent Garden. Since 1978 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Don Pizarro in Fidelio). He performed as Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival (1983-86). He also performed in concerts, performed oratorios by J. S. Bach, Haydn. In 1991, in Frankfurt am Main, he sang the part of Telramund in Lohengrin. Recordings include Klingsor’s part in Parsifal (dir. Karajan, DG), the title role in Hindemith’s Cardillac (dir. Albrecht, Wergo).
