Sergei Roldugin is a well-known cellist and conductor, People’s Artist of Russia, professor at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory. N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, artistic director of the St. Petersburg House of Music.

The musician was born in 1951 on Sakhalin. He received his professional education at the Riga Special Music School, and then at the Leningrad Conservatory, from which he graduated with honors in 1975 in the cello class with Professor A.P. Nikitin. The same teacher trained in graduate school (1975-1978) and later became his assistant.

In 1980, S. Roldugin won the third prize at the Prague Spring International Cello Competition (Czechoslovakia).

While still a student, the musician was accepted into the Honored Collective of the Republic of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Leningrad Philharmonic, which at that time was led by Evgeny Mravinsky. In this illustrious orchestra, he worked for 10 years. Later, from 1984 to 2003, S. Roldugin was the first soloist-accompanist of the cello group of the Mariinsky Theater Orchestra.

As a cello soloist, S. Roldugin took part in many music festivals in Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Finland, Great Britain, Norway, Scotland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Japan. Has performed with such well-known conductors as Y. Simonov, V. Gergiev, M. Gorenstein, A. Lazarev, A. Jansons, M. Jansons, S. Sondeckis, R. Martynov, J. Domarkas, G. Rinkevičius, M. Brabbins , A. Paris, R. Melia.

S. Roldugin’s conducting activity covers performances not only with symphony programs, but also in the theatrical sphere (performances of The Nutcracker and Le nozze di Figaro at the Mariinsky Theatre). The conductor has performed in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, as well as in Germany, Finland, and Japan.

A successful creative partnership has developed with the orchestras of the Moscow Philharmonic, the Mariinsky Theater, the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Capella, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia. E. F. Svetlanova, with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra “Russian Philharmonic”, with such famous performers as O. Borodina, N. Okhotnikov, A. Abdrazakov, M. Fedotov, and with young participants in the programs of the St. Petersburg House of Music, including including Miroslav Kultyshev, Nikita Borisoglebsky, Alena Baeva.

The performer’s extensive solo and orchestral repertoire includes compositions from different eras and styles. The musician has records on radio, television and at the Melodiya company.

S. Roldugin annually conducts a series of master classes in Russia, European countries, Korea and Japan. Participates in the work of the jury of national and international competitions. In 2003-2004 he was the rector of the St. Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory. Since 2006, Sergei Roldugin has been the artistic director of the St. Petersburg House of Music, created on his initiative.
