Debut 1961 (Munster). He performed in Germany (Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Hamburg). Since 1967 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Hunding in Valkyrie). Since 1968 at the Vienna Opera. Since 1971 in Covent Garden (parts of Hunding, Hagen in The Death of the Gods). In 1974, he performed with great success the part of Hans Sachs in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger Nuremberg (Salzburg Easter Festival, conductor Karajan).
One of the largest specialists in the Wagner repertoire. For a number of years he regularly sang at the Bayreuth Festival. Among the parties are Pogner in The Nuremberg Mastersingers, Titurel in Parsifal, Daland in The Flying Dutchman. He toured at La Scala, the Colon Theatre, the Grand Opera and others. He also sang roles in operas by R. Strauss and Schreker. Recordings include Hans Sachs (dir. Varviso, Philips), Hagen (dir. Karajan, Deutsche Grammophon).
