Italian singer (tenor). Debut 1863 (Parma, part of Gennaro in Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia). In 1864-67 he sang in Odessa. In 1870 he sang at La Scala the parts of Faust and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni. With great success he performed the title role in the Italian premiere of Lohengrin (1871, Bologna). From 1872 Campanini toured extensively, including in Russia. In the USA in 1873 he was a participant in the American premiere of Aida (the part of Radames). In 1883 he sang Faust at the opening of the Metropolitan Opera. One of the leading tenors of the 2nd half of the 19th century. Among the best parties are also Othello, Jose, Faust in Boito’s Mephistopheles. Left the stage in 1894. Brother Cleophonte Campanini.
