Debut 1912 (Padua, part of André Chénier). In 1913 he was successful at La Scala. In 1914 he performed here in the Italian premiere of Parsifal (the title role). Participated in the premieres of a number of operas by Pizzetti, Alfano, Montemezzi. Participated in the Italian premiere of Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi in 1919 (Rome, Rinucci part). Soloist at the Metropolitan Opera from 1922-35. In 1925 he sang the title role in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and sang in the American premiere of Sadko (1930). In 1935-50 director of the Metropolitan Opera.
