The Yaroslavl Academic Governor’s Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading symphonic ensembles in Russia. It was created in 1944. The formation of the collective took place under the direction of famous conductors: Alexander Umansky, Yuri Aranovich, Daniil Tyulin, Viktor Barsov, Pavel Yadykh, Vladimir Ponkin, Vladimir Weiss, Igor Golovchin. Each of them enriched the orchestra’s repertoire and performing traditions.

Odysseus Dimitriadi, Pavel Kogan, Kirill Kondrashin, Fuat Mansurov, Gennady Provatorov, Nikolai Rabinovich, Yuri Simonov, Yuri Fire, Carl Eliasberg, Neeme Järvi have taken part in the orchestra’s concerts as guest conductors. Outstanding musicians of the past performed with the Yaroslavl Orchestra: pianists Lazar Berman, Emil Gilels, Alexander Goldenweiser, Yakov Zak, Vladimir Krainev, Lev Oborin, Nikolai Petrov, Maria Yudina, violinists Leonid Kogan, David Oistrakh, cellists Svyatoslav Knushevitsky, Mstislav Rostropovich, Mikhail Khomitser, Daniil Shafran, singers Irina Arkhipova, Maria Bieshu, Galina Vishnevskaya, Yuri Mazurok. The team is proud of its collaboration with pianists Bella Davidovich, Denis Matsuev, violinists Valery Klimov, Gidon Kremer, Viktor Tretyakov, cellists Natalia Gutman, Natalia Shakhovskaya, opera singers Askar Abdrazakov, Alexander Vedernikov, Elena Obraztsova, Vladislav Piavko.

The extensive repertoire of the Yaroslavl Governor’s Orchestra covers music from the Baroque era to the works of contemporary composers. The concerts of D. Shostakovich, A. Khachaturian, T. Khrennikov, G. Sviridov, A. Pakhmutova, A. Eshpay, R. Shchedrin, A. Terteryan, V. Artyomov, E. Artemiev and others, held in Yaroslavl, were accompanied by great interest of the public luminaries of the music of the twentieth century.

The team constantly takes part in Russian and international festivals and competitions, including “Moscow Autumn”, “Panorama of Russian Music”, named after Leonid Sobinov, “Vologda Lace”, “Pecherskie Dawns”, Ivanovo Contemporary Music Festival, Vyacheslav Artyomov Festival, International competition of composers named after Sergei Prokofiev, the Academy of Music “New Wanderers”, concerts of the Congress of Composers of Russia, the Festival of Symphony Orchestras of the World in Moscow.

In 1994, the orchestra was headed by the People’s Artist of Russia Murad Annamamedov. With his arrival, the artistic level of the team has grown significantly.

During the philharmonic season, the orchestra gives about 80 concerts. In addition to many symphonic programs designed for different audiences, he participates in the performance of operas. Among them – “The Wedding of Figaro” by W. A. ​​Mozart, “The Barber of Seville” by G. Rossini, “La Traviata” and “Otello” by G. Verdi, “Tosca” and “Madama Butterfly” by G. Puccini, “Carmen” by G. Bizet , “The Castle of Duke Bluebeard” by B. Bartok, “Prince Igor” by A. Borodin, “The Queen of Spades”, “Eugene Onegin” and “Iolanta” by P. Tchaikovsky, “Aleko” by S. Rachmaninov.

In the extensive discography of the Yaroslavl Academic Governor’s Symphony Orchestra, albums with music by Russian composers occupy a significant place. The team recorded the opera “Otello” by G. Verdi.

Many musicians of the orchestra have been awarded state titles and awards, Russian and international prizes.

For the high artistic achievements of the collective, the governor of the Yaroslavl region A. Lisitsyn in 1996 was the first in the country to establish the status of the orchestra – “governor’s”. In 1999, by order of the Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, the team was awarded the title of “academic”.
