Vladimir Ovchinnikov was born in 1958 in Bashkiria. He graduated from the Central Special Music School at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of A.D. Artobolevskaya, and in 1981 from the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied under Professor A.A. Nasedkin (a student of G.G. Neuhaus).

Ovchinnikov is a laureate of the International Piano Competition in Montreal (Canada, 1980nd prize, 1984), the International Competition for Chamber Ensembles in Vercelli (Italy, 1982st prize, 1987). A significant place in the artist’s life belongs to pedagogical activity. For several years V. Ovchinnikov taught piano at the Royal Northern College of Music in the UK.
