Debut 1936 (Stockholm, part of Alfio in Rural Honor). From 1950 he performed in San Francisco. In 1951 Spanish. the role of King Mark in Tristan and Isolde on the stage of La Scala. Since 1952 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Telramund in Lohengrin). He also sang in Covent Garden (1951, Amfortas in Parsifal, etc.). Participant of the Bayreuth Festival 1951 (Wotan in the tetralogy “Ring of the Nibelungen”). He was a major interpreter of the Wagnerian heritage. He also sang in contemporary operas (Britten’s Peter Grimes, Hindemith’s The Painter Mathis, etc.).
