Paata Burchuladze

He made his debut in 1976 (Tbilisi). Winner of the 1st prize of the competition. P. I. Tchaikovsky (1982), L. Pavarotti in the USA (1986). In the 80s. started performing abroad. Since 1984 in Covent Garden (Ramfis in Aida, Basilio). At La Scala, he sang in the opera Nabucco (Zacharia’s part). At the Salzburg Festival in 1987, he performed the part of Commander in Don Giovanni (conducted by Karajan), performed at the Vienna Opera (parts of Banquo in Macbeth, Dositheus, etc.). He also sang at the Metropolitan Opera (1990, the part of Basilio and others), at Covent Garden (parts of Boris Godunov, Dositheus in 1989), at the Opera-Bastille, the Hamburg Opera and other theaters. In Genoa, he sang the part of Mephistopheles in Boito’s opera of the same name (directed by K. Russell, recorded on video, Primetime).

Among the performances of the last years of the role of Fiesco in the opera Simon Boccanegra by Verdi (1996, Stuttgart), Ramfis in Aida at the Arena di Verona festival (1997). Recordings include Dositheus (conductor Abbado, Deutsche Grammophon), Basilio (conductor Patane, Decca).
