Maria Caniglia
Debut 1930 (Turin, part of Chrysothemis in R. Strauss’s Elektra). Since 1930 at La Scala (debut in Mascagni’s opera Masks). She sang in operas by Alfano, Respighi. In 1935 she performed the part of Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff at the Salzburg Festival with great success. Since 1937 at Covent Garden and the Vienna Opera. In the same year she sang the title role in Gluck’s Iphigenia in Tauris at La Scala. Since 1938 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Desdemona).
Other roles include Aida, Tosca, Amelia in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra. In 1947-48 she performed the roles of Norma and Adriana Lecouvreur in the Cilea opera of the same name at the Colon Theatre. Canilla left a great legacy in the field of recording, with Gigli as a frequent partner. Note the recording of Aida’s part (conductor Serafin, EMI).
