Italian singer (baritone). Debut 1949 (Reggio nel Emilia, part Amonasro). In 1950 he performed on the stage of La Scala. In 1951, Capecchi made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera (Germont). He performed with great success at festivals in Aix-en-Provence, in Edinburgh. From 1962 he also performed at Covent Garden. Participated in the premieres of a number of operas by contemporary Italian composers (Malipiero, J. Napoli). He repeatedly sang at the Salzburg Festival (1961-62), at the Arena di Verona festival (1953-83). In 1977-80 he performed the part of Falstaff at the Glyndebourne Festival. The singer’s repertoire also includes the roles of Don Giovanni, Bartolo, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, and others. Among the performances of recent years are the roles of Don Alfonso in the opera Everyone Does It So (1991, Houston), Gianni Schicchi in the Puccini opera of the same name (1996, Toronto) . Toured in the USSR (1965). He performed roles in operas by Russian composers (The Queen of Spades, War and Peace, Shostakovich’s The Nose). Recordings include Figaro (dir. Frichai, DG), Dandini in Rossini’s Cinderella (dir. Abbado, DG).
