Debut 1960 (Luttich, part of Basilio). He made his debut at the Grand Opera in 1961 (as Wagner in Faust). From 1967 he performed at the Deutsche Oper (parts of Leporello, Figaro Mozart, Attila in the opera of the same name by Verdi, Prince Igor). Repeatedly performed at the Salzburg Festival. His performance in 1973 at Covent Garden (Escamillo’s part) was a huge success. Participated in the world premieres of Messiaen’s opera Francis of Assisi (1983, title role), Milhaud’s opera The Crime Mother (1966, Geneva). Among the performances of recent years are the roles of William Tell (1989, Grand Opera), Philip II (1996, Covent Garden). Other roles include: Mephistopheles, Golo in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande, Oedipus in Enescu’s opera of the same name, Don Alfonso in Everyone Does It So, and others.
