Debut 1969 (Hannover, part of Ottokar in “Free Shooter”). Then he sang in Düsseldorf, Hamburg (1973). From 1972 he performed at the Salzburg Festival, in the same year he made his debut at the Bayreuth Festival. He made his debut at Covent Garden in 1975 (Figaro), at the Metropolitan Opera in 1977 (Tungsten in Tannhäuser). Among the roles are also Hans Sachs in Wagner’s Nuremberg Mastersingers, Mandryk in Strauss’s Arabella, Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and others. Among the performances of recent years, the part of Scarpia (1996, German State Opera). Among the many recordings of Hans Sachs (dir. Zawallisch, EMI), Eugene Onegin (dir. Solti, Decca).
