He made his debut in 1958 (Berlin, part of Escamillo). Since 1962 soloist of the Hamburg Opera. In 1963, at the Glyndebourne Festival, he performed the role of the Count in R. Strauss’s opera Capriccio. In 1964 he participated in the premiere of Krenek’s opera The Golden Fleece (Hamburg). Since 1967 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Figaro). He has performed since 1973 at the Grand Opera. With great success he sang the part of Golo in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande (1983, Geneva). Among the parties are Don Giovanni, Germont, Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pascual. Among the recordings of the part of Count Almaviva (dir. Karajan, Decca), Liziart in Weber’s “Evryant” (dir. Yanovsky, EMI), etc.
