He made his debut in 1956 (Cairo, part of the Duke). From 1959 he performed at La Scala (his debut as Elvino in the opera La sonnambula), in the same year he sang the role of Edgar in Lucia di Lammermoor at Covent Garden with Sutherland, in 1961 he was successful in Rome (Alfred). In 1966 he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera (the part of the Duke). In 1969 he brilliantly performed the part of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (Salzburg Festival, conductor Karajan).

Participated in the opening of the Opera-Bastille (1989). In 1991-92 again at Covent Garden (Hoffmann in the opera The Tales of Hoffmann, Nemorino). In 1996 he performed the part of Werther in Zurich. Among the parties are also Faust, Des Grieux in Manon, Almaviva.

The largest singer of the second half of the 20th century.

Recordings include Alfred (conductor Muti), Werther (conductor Plasson, both EMI).
