Debut 1869 (Mariinsky Theatre, Richard’s part in Bellini’s The Puritans). He was a theater soloist until 1892. The first performer of the parts of Don Carlos in Dargomyzhsky’s The Stone Guest (1872), Tokmakov in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Pskovite Woman (1873), Boris Godunov (1874), Prince Vyazminsky in Tchaikovsky’s opera Oprichnik (1874) , Demon (1875), Bes in Tchaikovsky’s The Blacksmith Vakula (1876), Kalenika in Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night (1880), Prince Kurlyatev in Tchaikovsky’s The Enchantress (1887), Tomsky (1890), Prince Igor ( 1890). Other roles include Melnik in Rusalka, Escamillo (the first performer on the Russian stage), Germont, Rigoletto, Wolfram in Tannhäuser (the first performer on the Russian stage) and others.
