One of the leading art groups in Russia. Founded in 1931 under the Leningrad Broadcasting Committee. During the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, the orchestra continued to work in the besieged city, performing on the radio and in concert halls under the direction of K. I. Eliasberg; On August 9, 1942, the orchestra performed Shostakovich’s 7th symphony in the Great Hall of the Leningrad Philharmonic. Since 1953 – run by the Leningrad Philharmonic.

The orchestra was led by Eliasberg, N. S. Rabinovich, A. K. Jansons, Yu. Kh. Temirkanov. Since 1977, A. S. Dmitriev has been at the head of the orchestra. Conductors A. V. Gauk, N. S. Golovanov, E. A. Mravinsky, D. I. Pokhitonov, N. G. Rakhlin, G. N. Rozhdestvensky, S. A. Samosud, EP Svetlanov, B. E. Khaikin, many foreign guest performers, incl. J. Barbirolli, L. Maazel, G. Sebastian, G. Unger, B. Ferrero, F. Shtidri, composers I. F. Stravinsky, B. Britten, as well as famous instrumental soloists and singers.

The orchestra took part in the author’s concerts of many Soviet composers who acted as conductors or soloists – I. O. Dunaevsky, R. M. Glier, D. B. Kabalevsky, A. I. Khachaturian, T. N. Khrennikov and others.

The repertoire of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic includes major works of classical and contemporary music. A significant place in the programs is occupied by works by domestic authors. The orchestra is the first performer of many symphonic works by Leningrad composers – B. A. Arapov, R. N. Kotlyarevsky, A. P. Petrov, V. N. Salmanov, S. M. Slonimsky, B. I. Tishchenko, Yu. A. Falika and others. The orchestra tours in many cities of Russia, as well as abroad.
