Jules Devoyod
Started out as a dramatic actor. He made his debut on the opera stage in 1867 (Paris, the part of Nelusco in Meyerbeer’s African Woman). In 1875 he came to St. Petersburg for performances. Since then, a significant part of his creative life has been connected with Russia. He also performed at Covent Garden, La Scala (1883, part of Wotan in the Valkyrie, etc.). He performed the part of Ivan Susanin at the French premiere of the opera (1890, Nice). Among the best roles are Wilhelm Tell, Rigoletto, Valentin in Faust. He sang the latter on the stage of the Moscow Private Russian Opera in 1899 in a performance with the participation of Chaliapin. He died suddenly in Moscow during the performance of “Rigoletto”.
