Benno Kusche
German singer (bass-baritone). He made his debut in 1938 in Heidelberg (the role of Renato in Un ballo in maschera). Before the war, he sang in various theaters in Germany. Since 1946 at the Bavarian Opera (Munich). He also performed at La Scala, Covent Garden (1952-53). In 1954 he successfully sang Leporello at the Glyndebourne Festival.
Participated in the world premiere of Orff’s Antigone (1949, Salzburg Festival). In 1958 he sang the part of Papageno in the Komische-Opera (staged by Felsenstein). In 1971-72 he performed at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Beckmesser in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger Nuremberg). Of the recordings, we note the parts of Faninal in The Rosenkavalier (conducted by K. Kleiber, Deutsche Grammophon) and Beckmesser (conducted by Keilbert, Euro-disk).
