Performs since 1982. Since 1988 at La Scala (debut in Rossini’s Chance Makes a Thief). In 1989 he performed Rossini’s Bianca e Faliero at the Pesaro Festival. In 1991 he staged Madama Butterfly in Chicago. Since 1992 he has performed regularly at Covent Garden (1992, Bellini’s Puritani; 1995, Verdi’s Two Foscari; 1996, Verdi’s Joan of Arc). In 1995 he performed Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera. He has performed with orchestras in Florence, Turin, and Boston. From 1997 to 2009 he served as Principal Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. During his leadership of this orchestra, Gatti restored it to its status as one of the leading orchestras in London. In September 2008, he took over the leadership of the French National Orchestra. Among the recordings are “Armida” by Rossini (soloists Fleming, G. Kunde and others, Sony).
