A term used to denote the nature of the performance of a particular piece of music. excerpt, parts of a work. It is also used as an adjective to the main definition, e.g. Allegro appassionato for fp. op. 4 Scriabin, “Sonata appassionata” for piano. op. 57 of Beethoven (the name was not given by the composer; Beethoven himself used the designation appassionato in his piano sonatas op. 106 and 111). In these cases, the term indicates the general nature of the work.
