Debut 1953 (Vienna, part of Silvio in Pagliacci). From 1956 he sang in Covent Garden (Count Almaviva, Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal, etc.). He performed at the Bayreuth Festival in 1958-66. In 1960 he sang for the first time on stage at La Scala (Count Almaviva). At the Metropolitan Opera since 1961 (Tungsten in Tannhäuser, etc.). Among the parties are also Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Ottokar in The Free Shooter and a number of others. A teacher of a number of premieres of Austrian operas (Alfred’s part in Einem’s op. Visit of the Old Lady, 1971, Vienna, etc.). There was a hand. “Volksoper” in Vienna (1987-91), Vienna Opera (1991-92). Performed the title role in an outstanding recording of Don Giovanni (dir. Giulini, soloists Sutherland, Schwarzkopf, Schutti, Taddei, Alva, Cappuccili, Frick, EMI).
