First inversion of the triad; indicated by the number 6; is formed by moving the main sound of the triad up an octave. Between the lower sound of the sixth chord – the third and the displaced main sound – the prima is the interval of the sixth (hence the name).
A major sixth chord consists of intervals of a minor third and a perfect fourth, a minor sixth chord of a major third and a perfect fourth, a diminished sixth chord of a minor third and an augmented fourth, an augmented sixth chord of a major third and a diminished fourth. An increase in the sixth chord called. also an altered sixth chord with an augmented sixth. See Chord, Chord inversion.
