After graduating from the Moscow Conservatory, he trained in Vienna, Turin, Florence, and others. From 1885 he was a soloist at the Moscow Private Russian Opera. In 1887-1907 at the Bolshoi Theatre. Participated in the first productions of Arensky’s operas A Dream on the Volga (1890, part of Domovoy), Aleko (1893, part of the Old Man). The first performer on the Russian stage as Wotan (Wanderer) in Siegfried (1894). Among other parties, Mephistopheles, Melnik, Ruslan, Basilio and others also sang low baritone parts (for example, Kochubey in Mazepa). From 1907 he taught.
