René Pape, one of the leading basses of the new generation, received his musical education in his native Dresden. In 1988, while still a student, he made his debut at the Berlin State Opera, of which he remains a member of the troupe to this day. In this theater, René Pape performed all the main roles of his repertoire. Among them are the roles of Rocco, King Mark, King Henry, Pogner, Fasolt, Hunding, Sarastro, Figaro, Leporello and Don Giovanni in new productions conducted by Daniel Barenboim. In addition, on the stage of the Berlin Opera, the singer performed the part of Ramfis in the opera Aida (conductor Zubin Mehta), the part of Philip II in Don Carlos, as well as the parts of Gurnemanz (Parsifal) and Boris Godunov (Boris Godunov) in new productions conducted by the same conductor. It was in Berlin that success came to Rene Pape.

    René Pape has performed at all the leading opera houses in Europe, Japan (where he toured with the Metropolitan Opera and the Berlin State Opera) and the United States. After his successful debut, René Pape became a guest soloist with the New York Metropolitan Opera, where he is scheduled to perform through the 2014/2015 season. Conducted by conductor James Levine, René Pape participated in new productions of the operas Tristan und Isolde (King Mark), Fidelio (Rocco), Don Giovanni (Leporello), Faust (Mephistopheles), as well as in restored performances Lohengrin” (King Henry) and “Nuremberg Meistersingers” (Pogner). Under the direction of Valery Gergiev, he first performed the part of Gurnemanz in Parsifal. At the Chicago Lyric Opera, he sang Pogner (The Nuremberg Mastersingers, conducted by Christian Thielemann), King Mark (Tristan and Isolde, conducted by Semyon Bychkov) and Rocco (Fidelio, conducted by Christoph von Donagni), and in the 2009 season /2010 again performed the role of Mephistopheles in Faust. The singer performed on the stage of the San Francisco and Los Angeles opera houses, at music festivals in Bayreuth, Glyndebourne and Lucerne, at the Bavarian State Opera (Munich), in Orange, at the Stars of the White Nights St. Petersburg festival, festivals in Salzburg and Verbier.

    René Pape’s performances have been repeatedly broadcast on television and recorded on DVD. Under conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Colin Davis, James Levine, Georg Solti and Antonio Pappano, the singer has recorded for many record labels, including BMG, EMI, DGG and TELDEC.

    The television film “Maestro”, filmed for the ARTE channel, is dedicated to his work. René Pape starred in the films The Magic Flute (performing the roles of Sarastro and the Orator, directed by Kenneth Branagh) and The Magic Shooter (2009). His performance at the New York Metropolitan Opera as Sarastro (The Magic Flute) – a special version in English – was shown in theaters and broadcast in high quality live on television (December 2006). The singer has also released solo discs – “Gods, Kings and Demons” with the Dresden Staatskapelle Orchestra and a disc of Wagner’s works with the Berlin Staatskapelle Orchestra conducted by Daniel Barenboim at the DGG studio (2011). Rene Pape is the winner of two Grammy awards, and in 2002 he won the title of “singer of the year” according to the rating of Musical America magazine. In January 2007, he received the Opera News Award in New York.
