Julia Varady

Debut 1960 (Cluj). She sang here until 1970 (parts of Liu, Santuzza in Rural Honor and a number of others). After two seasons in the Frankfurt-am-Main theater, she sang in Munich from 1972 (among the parts are Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Fiordiligi in the op. Everyone does it, Cio-Cio-san, Arabella in the one-name op. R. Strauss, Elizabeth in Don Carlos). English debuted in Edinburgh (1974, title role in Gluck’s Alceste). A major achievement was the part of Cordelia in Reimann’s Lear (1978, Munich). Repeatedly sang, recorded with her husband Fischer-Dieskau. She performs as a chamber singer. Among the recordings of Lisette’s part in op. Cimarosa’s “Secret Marriage” (dir. Barenboim, Deutsche Grammophon), Vitellia in Mozart’s “Mercy of Titus” (dir. Gardiner, Deutsche Grammophon).
