James King
American singer (tenor). He made his debut as a baritone in 1961. In 1962 he made his tenor debut (San Francisco, part of Jose). Great success came to the singer after his European debut at the Berlin Deutsche Oper (1963, Lohengrin part). He performed in Munich, at the Salzburg Festival (1963, the part of Achilles in Gluck’s Iphigenia en Aulis). Since 1965, he regularly performed at the Bayreuth Festival (parts of Sigmund in Valkyrie, Parsifal, etc.). Since 1965 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Florestan in Fidelio), where he sang until 1990. Other roles include Manrico, Calaf, Othello. In 1983 he performed with great success at La Scala in Cherubini’s Anacreon. In 1985 he sang in Covent Garden the part of Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos by R. Strauss. He recorded many roles in operas by German composers, including Wagner, R. Strauss, Hindemith, of which we note the roles of Albrecht in the latter’s opera The Artist Mathis (conducted by Kubelik, EMI), Parsifal (conducted by Boulez, DG).
