How to promote a music group? Just 7 right steps to success

Many young musicians, having created a group, are faced with the fact that they cannot find their audience, because they do not know what steps to take for promotion.

Today we will talk about how to promote a musical group and what actions will help them become popular.

The procedure for promoting a musical group

  1. Creating a group image. Having decided on the direction in which the group is working, it is necessary to create its own original image: name, stage costumes, logo.
  2. Recording a demo disc (CD) is the most important step. Record the songs that you consider the most successful and original. It would be better if the entire diversity of the repertoire is presented on the disc. Pay special attention to the design of the disc: stylish graphics, the band’s logo, maybe a photo, a list of tracks and always contact information: phone numbers, email.
  3. Creating a press release. The demo disc must be accompanied by a well-written press release. You can also write it yourself, indicating the composition of the group, the direction in which the musicians work, and contact information.
  4. Disk replication. Make copies on different types of audio media. Offer recordings wherever possible: these could be radio stations, nightclubs, music festivals and charity concerts, cafes and restaurants, companies that organize corporate evenings. You shouldn’t expect big profits from your first concerts. Even if you work as an opening act for famous colleagues or perform for free in a nightclub. Your task is simply to express yourself.
  5. Media connection. Contact the editors of local magazines or newspapers and offer material – a note about your work, an interview with you, or a report from one of your performances.
  6. Flyer design. In order to promote a music group, you will need to create promotional materials – print, for example, flyers. It’s not difficult to design them yourself if you know how to use even the simplest image editors. Involve your acquaintances and friends who will help you spread it.
  7. Creating your own website. Creating a website will allow you to compile all the information about yourself, as well as upload new songs. It’s not that creating a website is not at all suitable for promotion; rather, it is information for future sponsors and for forming a fan club. And on the Internet you can promote music in more effective ways:
  • Register on all available social networks and create communities. Don’t neglect music social networks: “Realmusic”, “MusicForums”, “Yatalant”. Update posts in communities weekly, write about all the news that relates to your performances.
  • Upload a video from a rehearsal or concert to YouTube video hosting. You can also create your own video telling about the group.
  • Use online labels. Essentially, these are the same recording studios, but they distribute tracks across Internet communities. You can record your album without spending huge amounts of money.

The proposed scheme shows how to promote a musical group at the initial stage. By following these simple steps, over time you will determine the most convenient ways for you to promote your music.
