Fritz Wunderlich
Debut 1955 (Stuttgart, Tamino part). From 1959 he sang in Munich, then at the Vienna Opera. In the same year, he took part in the premiere of Orff’s Oedipus Rex (Tiresias) and performed the part of Henry in Strauss’ The Silent Woman at the Salzburg Festival.
An outstanding achievement was the performance of the singer as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni (1966, Covent Garden). Sang the part of Tamino at the Edinburgh Festival (1966). Participated in the world premiere of Egk’s The Inspector General (1957). Other roles include Belmont in Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio, Wozzeck in Berg’s opera of the same name, Palestrina in Pfitzner’s opera of the same name, and Jenik in Smetana’s opera The Bartered Bride.
Recordings of Fenton’s role in The Merry Wives of Windsor include Nicolai (conductor L. Hager, EMI), Tamino (conductor Böhm, Deutsche Grammophon). Tragically died in an accident.
