Debut 1965 in Braunschweig, then worked in Düsseldorf and Duiburg. Since 1969 he has performed regularly in Bayreuth (parts of the Helmsman, Eric in The Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin). Becomes one of the leading singers of the Wagner repertoire. In 1970, he performed the part of Parsifal at the Grand Opera with great success. Later he performed at the Vienna Opera (since 1971), Covent Garden, La Scala.

He performed the role of Walter in Die Meistersinger Nuremberg at the Salzburg Festival in 1974, directed by Karajan. Since 1976 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Lohengrin). In 1985 he performed as Tristan at the Grand Opera. In 1990-91 he sang the role of Siegfried in the production of Der Ring des Nibelungen at Covent Garden.

Among the roles are also Max in The Free Shooter, Othello, Herod in Salome, etc. Among the recordings of the part are Parsifal (conductor Solti, Decca), Paul in the opera The Dead City by Korngold (conductor Leinsdorf, RCA Victor).
