A sign of refusal to alteration of one or another degree of the scale. Bekar means stepping down a semitone after a sharp and raising a semitone after a flat, as well as stepping down a step after a double sharp and raising a step after a double flat.
A return to a simple alteration after a double one (double-sharp, double-flat) is currently indicated by one sharp and one flat, respectively (see Musical Alphabet).
