The high reputation of the orchestra in the world is the result of fruitful cooperation with remarkable Russian conductors: A. Orlov, N. Golovanov, A. Gauk, G. Rozhdestvensky. N. Myaskovsky, S. Prokofiev, A. Khachaturian, G. Sviridov, D. Shostakovich, B. Tchaikovsky entrusted the BSO with the first performance of their compositions. From 1974 to this day, Vladimir Fedoseev has been the permanent artistic director and chief conductor of the ensemble.

The State Academic Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra named after P. I. Tchaikovsky was founded in 1930 as the first symphony orchestra in the Soviet Union. It has repeatedly proved its right to be called one of the best orchestras in the world – a right won by history, meticulous work at the microphones and intense concert activity.

The high reputation of the orchestra in the world is the result of fruitful cooperation with remarkable Russian conductors: A. Orlov, N. Golovanov, A. Gauk, G. Rozhdestvensky. N. Myaskovsky, S. Prokofiev, A. Khachaturian, G. Sviridov, D. Shostakovich, B. Tchaikovsky entrusted the BSO with the first performance of their compositions. The annals of the orchestra include the names of conductors: L. Stokowski and G. Abendroth, L. Maazel and K. Mazur, E. Mravinsky and K. Zecca, soloists of the past: S. Richter, D. Oistrakh, A. Nezhdanova, S. Lemeshev, I. Arkhipova, L. Pavarotti, N. Gyaurov, as well as modern performers: V. Tretyakov, P. Tsukerman, Y. Bashmet, O. Mayzenberg, E. Leonskaya, A. Knyazev. At one time, it was Vladimir Fedoseev and the BSO who discovered the names of E. Kissin, M. Vengerov, V. Repin to the world. And now the orchestra continues to cooperate with the best soloists from different countries.

In 1993, the orchestra was given the great name of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky – for a genuine, deep interpretation of his compositions.

Recordings of the orchestra’s huge repertoire from Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mahler to contemporary music were released by Sony, Pony Canyon, JVC, Philips, Relief, Warner Classics & Jazz, Melodiya.

The orchestra’s repertoire includes monographic cycles, projects for children, charity events, as well as concerts that combine music and words. Along with performances in the largest halls of the world, the BSO continues to conduct active educational activities, organizing music evenings at the Tretyakov Gallery and Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The list of countries in which the Grand Symphony Orchestra has performed reflects almost the entire map of the world. But the most important activity of the BSO are concerts in the cities of Russia – Smolensk and Vologda, Cherepovets and Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk and Sarov, Perm and Veliky Novgorod, Tyumen and Yekaterinburg. Only in the 2017/2018 season the team performed in St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Tver, Klin, Tashkent, Perm, Sochi, Krasnodar, Ramenskoye.

In the 2015/2016 season, the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 85th anniversary by performing bright concert programs in Moscow, the cities of Germany, Austria, Holland, Italy and Switzerland with the participation of outstanding musicians. The project “Mozart. Letters to you…”, in which the composer’s work was considered in close relationship with his personality, environment and life events. The orchestra continued this format in similar cycles dedicated to Beethoven (2016/2017) and Tchaikovsky (2017/2018). Beethoven’s work became the central theme of performances in the 2017/2018 season as well. The orchestra dedicated a whole festival to the composer, who passed away 190 years ago. The basis of these projects were instrumental concerts and major symphonic works of the composer. In addition, the orchestra presented programs for the 145th anniversary of the birth of Rachmaninoff, as well as a new cycle of concerts “Music for All: Orchestra and Organ”, timed to coincide with the opening of the organ of the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory after restoration. The touring activities of the Bolshoi Symphony Orchestra and its artistic director Vladimir Fedoseev are still full of activity: in the 2017/18 season, the musicians performed in China, Japan, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Greece.

In the 2018/2019 concert season, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra will go on tour to Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Turkey, Spain and China. In Moscow, in addition to the Great Hall of the Conservatory, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, the Bolshoi Theater, the State Kremlin Palace, he will give a series of concerts in the new Zaryadye Hall. In the new season, such famous vocalists as Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov, Michele Pertusi, Elina Garancha, Venera Gimadieva, Agunda Kulaeva, Alexey Tatarintsev, Vasily Ladyuk will perform with BSO in the new season; pianists Peter Donohoe, Barry Douglas, Elizaveta Leonskaya, Andrei Korobeinikov, Sergei Redkin; violinists Sarah Chang, Alena Baeva, Nikita Borisoglebsky, Dmitry Smirnov, Matvey Blyumin; cellists Pablo Ferrandez, Boris Andrianov, Alexander Ramm. In addition to artistic director Vladimir Fedoseyev, the orchestra will be conducted by Neeme Järvi, Michael Sanderling, Daniel Oren, Karel Mark Chichon, Michelangelo Mazza, Leos Swarovski, Vinzenz Praksmarer, Denis Lotoev.
