Yuri Borisovich Abdokov is a Russian composer, teacher, professor at the Moscow Conservatory, candidate of art criticism, Honored Art Worker of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

He received his academic composing education at the Russian Academy of Music. Gnesin, which he graduated ahead of schedule (with honors) in 1992 in the class of composition and orchestration under the guidance of Professor, People’s Artist of Russia, laureate of state awards of the USSR N.I. Gnesins (1992-1994) under the guidance of Professor, People’s Artist of the USSR, Laureate of the State Prize of the USSR B. A. Tchaikovsky.

He began teaching composition at the university, being an assistant to Professor B. A. Tchaikovsky at the RAM. Gnesins (1992-1994).

In 1994-1996 within the framework of the International creative workshop “Terra musica” he led master classes for composers and opera and symphony conductors (Munich, Florence).

In 1996 he was invited to teach at the composition department of the Moscow State Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, where, in addition to the individual class, he leads the course “History of Orchestral Styles” for composers and opera and symphony conductors of the Moscow Conservatory, as well as the course “Orchestral Styles” for foreign students of the Conservatory.

In 2000-2007 headed the department of composition he created at the Academy of Choral Art. V.S. Popov.

In parallel with the conservatory, since 2000, he has been a professor at the Moscow State Academy of Arts, where he teaches courses in musical dramaturgy, composition and orchestration with choreographers, and also provides scientific guidance to graduate students.

As part of the International Creative Workshop “Terra Musica” he leads numerous master classes for young Russian and foreign composers, conductors and choreographers, conducts classes with gifted children composers from Moscow, near and far abroad.

Academic supervisor of numerous dissertation projects on composition theory, orchestral writing and historical instrumental and orchestral styles, musical (including choreographic) theatre, conducting and pedagogy.

Among the students Yu. B. Abdokova (over 70) – 35 laureates of international competitions and prizes, including – composer: Humie Motoyama (USA – Japan), Gerhard Marcus (Germany), Anthony Raine (Canada), Dmitry Korostelev (Russia), Vasily Nikolaev (Russia) , Petr Kiselev (Russia), Fedor Stepanov (Russia), Arina Tsytlenok (Belarus); conductor – Arif Dadashev (Russia), Nikolai Khondzinsky (Russia), choreographer – Kirill Radev (Russia – Spain), Konstantin Semenov (Russia) and others.

Author of works of various genres. Among the largest are the opera “Rembrandt” (based on the drama by D. Kedrin), the opera-parable “Svetlorukaya” (according to the ancient Caucasian tradition); ballets “Autumn Etudes”, “Secret Barriers”; three symphonies, including the symphony “In the hour of imperceptible sorrow” for large orchestra and treble choir, a symphony for piano, string quartet and timpani; five string quartets; compositions for various instrumental ensembles, piano, organ, cello, harpsichord, viol d’amour, choir, etc. Author of numerous orchestrations, including reconstructions of early music. In 1996 he orchestrated for a large symphony orchestra “Prelude-Bells” by B. A. Tchaikovsky – a fragment of the last, unfinished work of the composer. The posthumous premiere of The Bells took place in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 2003.

Author of more than 100 scientific papers, essays, abstracts on the problems of musical composition, theory and history of the orchestra and orchestral styles, choreography, including the monograph “Musical Poetics of Choreography. Composer’s view” (M. 2009), “My teacher is Boris Tchaikovsky” (M. 2000) and others.

Head of the International Creative Workshop “Terra musica” (Yuri Abdokov`s International Creative Workshop “Terra musica”) for composers, opera and symphony conductors and choreographers (Russia, Germany, Italy).

Member of the Board of the Society for the Study and Preservation of the Creative Heritage of B. A. Tchaikovsky (The Boris Tchaikovsky Sosiety).

Weinberg, B. A. Tchaikovsky, N. I. Peiko, G. V. Sviridov, D. D. Shostakovich and others.
