Debut 1950 at the Vienna Opera (among the roles of Leporello, Mozart’s Figaro, Wozzeck in the op. Berg of the same name, Baron Ochs in The Rosenkavalier, and other parts). He sang at the Salzburg Festival from 1952 (parts of Masetto in Don Giovanni, Papageno, Leporello). Participant of world premieres op. Einem’s Trial (1953), Egk’s Irish Legend (1955, both in Salzburg). From 1966 he sang at the Metropolitan Opera (part of Barak the dyer in R. Strauss’s “Woman Without a Shadow” and others). Since 1976 he has performed at Covent Garden. He was married to the singer Ludwig (mezzo). Repeatedly performed at the Vienna Opera. In 1976 he sang there in the world premiere of Op. “Deceit and love” Einem, in 1990 in op. “Soldiers” Zimmerman. gastr. with VO in Moscow (1971). In repertoire. B. also played Wagnerian parts (Wotan in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Telramund in Lohengrin, and others). Recordings include Don Alfonso’s part in “Everybody Does It So” (dir. Böhm, EMI), Baron Oks (dir. Bernstein, Sony).
