Debut 1948 (Bologna, part of Violetta), after which the singer gained great fame. In 1956 she performed the part of Cleopatra in Handel’s Julius Caesar at La Scala. In 1957, she also participated in the world premiere of Poulenc’s opera Dialogues des Carmelites (Blanche). Since 1958 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Violetta). She repeatedly sang at the Arena di Verona festival (part of Aida, etc.). She toured on the leading stages of the world, including the Bolshoi Theatre. In 1977 she sang the title role in Giordano’s Fedora in Barcelona. Other parts include Tosca, Desdemona, Leonora in Verdi’s The Force of Destiny, Manon Lescaut. Together with Rossi-Lemeni (her husband) she took part in the recording of Mascagni’s rarely performed opera Little Marat by Mascagni (conducted by Fabritiis, Fone).
