Michael Balfe |

Irish composer, singer (baritone), conductor. In 1827 he sang at the Théâtre Italienne (Paris). His interpretation of the role of Figaro was approved by the author. He performed in the regions of Italy. In 1830, his first op. was premiered in Palermo. “Rivals on their own.” In 1834 B. sang at La Scala with Malibran in Rossini’s Otello (part of Iago). In 1845-52 he was the conductor of one of the London theaters. Toured in Russia (1852, 1859-60, St. Petersburg). Among the best operas is The Bohemian Girl (1843, London, Drury Lane). In 1951 it was successfully staged in London and recorded by Boning (Argo).
