Sonia Ganassi is one of the most outstanding mezzo-sopranos of our time, constantly performing on the most prestigious stages in the world. Among them are the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, La Scala, the Real Theater in Madrid, the Liceu Theater in Barcelona, the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and other theaters.
She was born in Reggio Emilia. She studied singing with the famous teacher A. Billar. In 1990, she became a laureate of the competition for young singers in Spoleto, and two years later she made her debut as Rosina in Rossini’s Barber of Seville at the Rome Opera. The brilliant start of her career was the reason for the invitation of the singer to the best theaters in Italy (Florence, Bologna, Milan, Turin, Naples), Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao), USA (New York, San Francisco, Washington), as well as in Paris , London, Leipzig and Vienna.
The outstanding achievements of the singer received well-deserved recognition: in 1999 she was awarded the main prize of Italian music critics – the Abbiati Prize – for her interpretation of the part of Zaida in Donizetti’s opera Don Sebastian of Portugal.
Sonia Ganassi is recognized as one of the best performers of mezzo-soprano and dramatic soprano parts in Rossini’s operas (Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Angelina in Cinderella, Isabella in The Italian Girl in Algiers, the main roles in Hermione and Queen Elizabeth England”), as well as in the repertoire of romantic bel canto (Jane Seymour in Anne Boleyn, Leonora in The Favorite, Elizabeth in Donizetti’s Mary Stuart; Romeo in Capuleti and Montecchi, Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma). In addition, she also brilliantly performs roles in Mozart’s operas (Idamant in Idomeneo, Dorabella in Everyone Does It, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni), Handel (Rodelinda in the opera of the same name), Verdi (Eboli in Don Carlos ”), French composers (Carmen in Bizet’s opera of the same name, Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther, Niklaus in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann, Marguerite in Berlioz’s Damnation of Faust).
Sonia Ganassi’s concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Requiem, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella and Oedipus Rex, Mahler’s Songs of the Traveling Apprentice, Rossini’s Stabat Mater, Berlioz’s Summer Nights, and Schumann’s Paradise and Peri oratorio.
The singer’s concerts are held in the halls of the Berlin Philharmonic and Amsterdam Concertgebouw, in Milan’s La Scala Theater and New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, and many other prestigious halls in the world.
The singer collaborated with such famous maestros as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chaiy, Riccardo Muti, Myung-Wun Chung, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Antonio Pappano, Daniele Gatti, Daniel Barenboim, Bruno Campanella, Carlo Rizzi.
Sonia Ganassi has contributed to numerous CD and DVD recordings for Arthaus Musik, Naxos, C Major, Opus Arte (Bellini’s Norma, Donizetti’s Mary Stuart, Don Giovanni and Idomeneo) Mozart; “The Barber of Seville”, “Cinderella”, “Moses and Pharaoh” and “The Lady of the Lake” by Rossini, as well as other operas).
Among the upcoming (or recent) engagements of the singer are Mozart’s “That’s How Everyone Do It” at the Rieti Festival, Donizetti’s Roberto Devereaux in Japan (tour with the Bavarian State Opera), Verdi’s Requiem in Parma with an orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov and in Naples with Riccardo Muti, Rossini’s Semiramide in Naples, Berlioz’s Romeo and Julia in concert with the Enlightenment Orchestra in London and Paris, Werther in Washington, Norma in Salerno, Norma in Berlin and touring with this production in Paris, Anna Boleyn in Washington and Vienna, Bellini’s Outlander, Donizetti’s Lucrezia Borgia and Don Carlos in Munich, recital in Frankfurt, Verdi’s Aida in Marseille, Capuleti e Montecchi ” in Salerno, Offenbach’s “Grand Duchess of Gerolstein” in Liege and “Don Giovanni” in Valencia under the direction of Zubin Meta.
