Debut 1944 (St. Gallen). Since 1950 in the Basle tr-re (since 1956 chief conductor). Participated in the American premiere of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1960, San Francisco). In 1961 debut at the Metropolitan Opera (“Lucia di Lammermoor”). In 1962 he performed at the Glyndebourne Festival (The Marriage of Figaro) and at Covent Garden (The Rosenkavalier, etc.). Principal conductor of the Stockholm Opera in 1965-72. Participated in the Bayreuth Festivals since 1969 (The Flying Dutchman, The Nuremberg Mastersingers, Lohengrin). Worked in Stuttgart since 1972. At the Grand Opera in 1980-81. Among the productions of recent years are “Lohengrin” (1990, Stuttgart), “Woman Without a Shadow” (1993, Florence). Among the recordings are “The Barber of Seville” (soloists M. Ausenzi, Bergans, Benelli, Coren, Giaurov, Decca), “Italian in Algeria” (soloists Bergans, Alva, Panerai, Corena and others, Decca).
