Debut 1964 (Spoleto, part of Collen in La bohème). In the same year he successfully performed the role of Procida in Verdi’s Sicilian Vespers in Rome. He performed in leading theaters in Italy (including in Venice he performed the part of Mephistopheles, 1965). In 1969 he sang at the Glyndebourne Festival (Don Giovanni). Since 1970 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Silva in Verdi’s Hernani), since 1972 at Covent Garden (debut as Fiesco in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra). In 1979, at the Grand Opera, he sang the part of Zechariah in Verdi’s Nabucco. Among the performances of recent years are the title roles in the opera Don Quixote by Massenet (1992, Florence), in the opera Moses in Egypt by Rossini (1994, Covent Garden). The roles also include Raymond in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alvise in Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, Count Almaviva and others. Among the recordings of the role of Boris Godunov (conducted by Rostropovich, Erato), Mustafa in Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers (conducted by Abbado, Deutsche Gramophone).
