Pinch on the guitar. general information
The guitar pluck is one of the widely used techniques. Used by both beginners and professionals. In professional music, the elements are somewhat more complicated. First, we will analyze simple methods available for beginners, later we will move on to more complex ones.
How to pluck the guitar
Hand position
Right hand on guitar is in a relaxed state. The forearm (part from the hand to the elbow) rests approximately in the middle on the body of the guitar. If you lower your fingers in this position (as if “spreading” them along the strings), they go beyond the first string at about a distance of one phalanx of the index finger. Such a “reserve” is made in order to make it convenient to perform this element and freely operate with the thumb.
Such a pluck on the guitar can be played closer to the stand. The sound will be sharper and richer. But you should not do this all the time (it can loosen the stand). Less sharp, but deeper will be the sound performed over the rosette. At the same time, the hand is no longer relaxed, but extended, resulting in an approximate angle of 45 degrees relative to all strings.
The palm itself leaves a large gap from the strings – it is approximately 6-8 cm. This is necessary for free performance. The thumb is slightly arched “out” and ready to pull the bass strings.
How to pluck strings
The main task when playing the guitar with plucks is to hook several strings at the same time.
Let there be a classic case with a pluck of three strings. These will be index, middle and nameless. They are located on 3,2,1 strings respectively. Bent in the second phalanx and partially in the first. We get rounded fingers. Now you should put them on the strings. We rest with pads approximately 0,5 cm from the nail. The faster the work, the faster and sharper the movements should be made. The closer we place it to the nail (we play practically with it), so that the pad does not “slip” in the string.
When the support is made, we make a jerking movement from the bottom up. Fingers seem to spring. At the same time, you should not bend them close, much less press them against the palm of your hand. They should leave the strings no more than a couple of centimeters. No special effort should be made. This is a natural movement, as if you were just moving your fingers without a guitar.
The attack depends on the nature of the work. But the pinch itself is sharp, not smeared. The sound should be clear and understandable. The main thing is to extract it from each string in the same way, without squeezing any of them. In addition, the sound should turn out to be simultaneous – in this case, consonance is formed.
After extraction, it usually needs to be muffled. This exactly repeats the process of putting the fingers on the strings. It is worth training the pinch-stub separately. The thumb usually brings out the bass.
Technique clip with mediator
A more “advanced” technique is the use of a mediator. In this case, we hold the plectrum large and forefinger. This is necessary for blues, jazz, ambient music, used in fingerstyle.
The main problem with how to pluck a guitar with a pick is coordination. To begin with, you should learn how to perform a pinch with the middle-ring and little fingers, since this combination will most often occur. Then you need to simultaneously pull both the bass and the strings. This is a difficult moment, you have to sit over it. First, just play one chord, then increase their number. The mediator should not be sluggish – the downward movement is clear and confident, together with other fingers. You should also master the alternate extraction of bass by a mediator and picking.

Rhythmic plucking patterns
Classic drawing
Many rhythmic patterns played on 4/4. One or two hits – 1-2 picks.

waltz pinch
You can often find the name fight waltz. This is when the score goes to a triple time signature, where the first beat (and the fourth, if for example 6/8) is a bass hit, and the rest are tweaks.

thug drawing
The simplest is one bass, one tuck. Despite the name thug fight used in songs of various genres.

plucked busts
Most often we pull 3, but there may be 2 or 4. Depending on the piece being performed, this is either 1-3 or 2-4 (there may be other combinations). Also sometimes they play through one, using dead notes, but these are special cases.
The number of pinches themselves in a row also varies. This is dictated either by the size of the song and the intention of the composer, or by the freer presentation of the guitarist himself.
Guitar pluck songs
In order to perfectly master playing the guitar with plucks, you should learn a few songs using this technique.
- Animals – “Districts quarters”
- Song from the movie “Operation” Y “” – “Wait the locomotive”
- Song from the movie “We are from the future” – “In the hands of the machine”
- M. Krug – “Girl Pie”
- Nautilus Pompilius – “Wings”
Conclusion
This is a simple trick that will greatly diversify your game. Moreover, in many cases it is mandatory and many beautiful things cannot be played without it.
