He worked in the opera houses of Mainz, Lübeck, Kassel (1963-72). Principal conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1972-79). Since 1988 he has been chief conductor of the Hamburg Opera. He worked with orchestras in Berlin, Zurich. Among the productions are Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron at the Munich Festival (1982), The Flying Dutchman (1986, Covent Garden). Participated in the world premiere of the opera The Story of Dr. Johann Faust by Schnittke (1995, Hamburg). 1st performer of a number of works by V. Rome, Reiman. Among the recordings of the opera are Spohr, Zemlinsky, Hindemith, Henze.
