American composer, representative of one of the avant-garde movements, the so-called. “minimalism”. He was also heavily influenced by Indian music. A number of his operas are very popular. Thus, the opera Einstein on the Beach (1976) is one of the few American compositions staged at the Metropolitan Opera.

Among others: “Satyagraha” (1980, Rotterdam, about the life of M. Gandhi), “Akhenaton” (1984, Stuttgart, libretto by the author), the premiere of which became a major event in the musical life of the 80s. (in the center of the plot is the image of Pharaoh Akhenaten, who refused polygamy in the name of love for Nefertiti and built a city in honor of his new god Aten), Journey (1992, Metropolitan Opera).
