Debut in 1903 in St. Petersburg (Demon). In 1909-48 he was a soloist at the Mariinsky Theatre. In 1913-14 he sang in Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons (in Paris the part of Shaklovity in Khovanshchina, in London the part of Prince Igor, his partner in these operas was Chaliapin). 1st performer of the Chinese Emperor in Stravinsky’s The Nightingale (1914, Paris). Among the parties are also Gryaznoy, Tomsky, Amonasro, Ruslan. 1st performer in Russia of the part of Peter I in Lorzing’s opera The Tsar and the Carpenter (1908). In 1939 he received the title of People’s Artist of the USSR. In 1919-1928 and 1934-1950 he taught at the Leningrad Conservatory, from 1926 he was a professor.
