Swiss singer (bass). Debut 1947 (Trieste, part of Varlaam). Already in 1948 he performed at La Scala. In 1953 he performed Falstaff at Covent Garden with great success. From 1954 he sang for a number of years at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Leporello). He performed at the Edinburgh (1965) and Salzburg Festivals (1965, as Osmin in Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio; 1975, as Leporello).
