Italian composer, representative of the Neapolitan opera school. He wrote over 70 operas, among them the most famous are Merope (1741, Venice), Artaxerxes (1749, Rome), Phaeton (1753, Stuttgart). The composer is sometimes referred to as the “Italian Gluck” because he followed much the same path as Gluck in his attempt to transform the traditional opera seria. Interest in the composer’s work remains to this day. In 1988 La Scala staged the opera Phaeton.
