Mariella Devia is one of the greatest Italian bel canto masters of our time. A native of Liguria, the singer graduated from Rome’s Accademia Santa Cecilia and made her debut in 1972 at the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto as Despina in Mozart’s “Everyone Does It That Way”. She made her New York Metropolitan Opera debut in 1979 as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto. In subsequent years, the singer performed on all the famous stages of the world without exception – at the Milan Teatro alla Scala, the Berlin State Opera and the German Opera, the Paris National Opera, the Zurich Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the La Fenice Theater in Venice, the Genoese Carlo Felice, the Neapolitan San Carlo Theater , the Turin Teatro Regio, the Bologna Teatro Comunale, at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, at the London Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Florentine Maggio Musicale, the Palermo Teatro Massimo, at festivals in Salzburg and Ravenna, in the concert halls of New York (Carnegie Hall), Amsterdam ( Concertgebouw), Rome (Accademia Nazionale Santa Cecilia).
The singer won worldwide fame in the leading roles in the operas of Mozart, Verdi and, first of all, the composers of the bel canto era – Bellini, Donizetti and Rossini. Among the crown parties of Mariella Devia are Lucia (Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor), Elvira (Bellini’s Puritani), Amenida (Rossini’s Tancred), Juliet (Bellini’s Capuleti and Montagues), Amina (Bellini’s Sleepwalker), Mary Stuart in Donizetti’s opera of the same name, Violetta (Verdi’s La Traviata), Imogen (Bellini’s The Pirate), Anna Boleyn and Lucrezia Borgia in Donizetti’s operas of the same name, and many others. Mariella Devia has worked with such distinguished conductors as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chaiy, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Wolfgang Sawallisch.
Among the significant performances of the singer in recent years are Elizabeth (Roberto Devereux by Donizetti) at the Opéra de Marseille and New York’s Carnegie Hall, Anna (Anna Boleyn by Donizetti) at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste, Imogen (Bellini’s Pirate) at the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona , Liu (Puccini’s Turandot) at the Carlo Felice theater in Genoa, Norma at the Bellini opera of the same name at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, as well as solo concerts at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro and at the La Scala theater in Milan.
The singer owns an extensive discography: among her recordings are the part of Sofia in the opera Signor Bruschino by Rossini (Fonitcetra), Adina in Donizetti’s Love Potion (Erato), Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor (Fone), Amina in Bellini’s La sonnambula (Nuova Era), Linda in Donizetti’s Linda di Chamouni (Teldec), Lodoiski in Cherubini’s opera of the same name (Sony) and others.
