Debut 1893 (Montpellier, part of Balthasar in Donizetti’s The Favorite). Soloist at Covent Garden (1897-1908), sang at the Metropolitan Opera from 1900 (debut as Ramfis in Aida). Performed at the Grand Opera. Since 1922, he often sang at La Scala, where he was a member of a number of premieres conducted by Toscanini, among them the opera Nero by Boito (1924, part of Simon Magot). In 1926 he performed the part of Dositheus. Other roles include Mephistopheles, Wilhelm Tell, Athanael in Massenet’s Thais, Hans Sachs in Wagner’s Nuremberg Mastersingers. The last performance of the singer took place in 1933 at the Grand Opera.
