Joseph Keilberth
He worked at the Karlsruhe Opera House (1935-40). In 1940-45 the head of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. In 1945-51 chief conductor of the Dresden Opera. He performed in 1952-56 in Bayreuth, where he staged productions of Der Ring des Nibelungen, Lohengrin, Wagner’s Flying Dutchman.
His production at the Edinburgh Opera Festival of The Rosenkavalier (1952) is considered outstanding. Since 1957 he has been participating in the Salzburg Festival (Arabella by R. Strauss and others). In 1959-68 he was chief conductor of the Bavarian Opera in Munich. He died during the performance of Tristan and Isolde. Recordings include Hindemith’s Cardillac (in the title role of Fischer-Dieskau, Deutsche Grammophon), Lohengrin (soloists Windgassen, Stieber, Teldec).
