Sylvain Cambreling |

French conductor. Debuted in 1976. Since 1977 he has performed at the Grand Opera. Since 1981 he has performed at the Glyndebourne Festival and at the English National Opera (The Barber of Seville, Louise by G. Charpentier). In 1981-92, musical director of the La Monnaie Theater in Brussels (among the productions are Lohengrin, Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, Mozart’s Idomeneo). In 1984 he made his debut at La Scala (Mozart’s Lucius Sulla). Since 1985 at the Metropolitan Opera (Romeo and Juliet by Gounod and others). In 1988 he performed the opera Samson and Delilah at the Bregenz Festival. In 1991 he staged Der Ring des Nibelungen in Brussels (dir. G. Wernicke). In 1993-96 he worked at the Frankfurt Opera (Wozzeck, Elektra, Jenufa by Janáček). In 1994 he performed Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress at the Salzburg Festival, and Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande in 1997 there. Among the recordings are Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffmann (soloists Schikoff, Serra, Norman, Plowright, Van Dam, EMI), Lucius Sulla (soloists Kuberly, Rolfe-Johnson, Murray, Ricersag).
