Debut 1962 (Zurich, as mezzo, as Annina in Der Rosenkavalier). The first soprano part was Amelia in Un ballo in maschera (ibid.). In 1963 she sang the role of Lady Macbeth in Cardiff. Since 1964 in Covent Garden (Leonora in Il trovatore, Senta in Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, etc.). In 1965, she successfully sang the role of Sieglinde in the Valkyrie directed by Solti. Since 1966 she has performed at the Bayreuth Festival (including in 1976 she sang the part of Brunhilde at the 100th anniversary of the Ring of the Nibelung cycle). Since 1966 she has been a soloist of the Vienna Opera, in the same season she performed for the first time at La Scala (Leonora in Il trovatore). Since 1972 at the Metropolitan Opera (debut as Sieglinde). In 1986 she performed the part of Salome at Covent Garden. Other roles include Donna Anna, the Marshall in the Rosenkavalier, the title role in Cherubini’s Medea, and so on. She has made numerous recordings, including the part of Brunhilde in the video recording of Der Ring des Nibelungen (1980, dir. Boulez, Philips).
